[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi वाफ (vāpha), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀧𑁆𑀨𑀸𑀉𑀮 (vapphāula, “very hot”), from 𑀯𑀸𑀳 (vāha, “tear”), from Sanskrit वाष्प (vāṣpa). Compare Bhojpuri भाप (bhāp).
