Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *wásHanam (“clothing, garment”), from Proto-Indo-European *wés-h₂nos (“clothing”), from the root *wes- (“to wear”). By surface analysis, वस् (vas, “to wear, put on”, root) + -अन (-ana, instrument noun), literally “means of clothing oneself”.[1] Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬀𐬥𐬀 (vaŋhana, “garment”), Ancient Greek ἑᾰνός (heanós).
