Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘪𑘯𑘜 (vaḷaṇa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀮𑀡 (valaṇa), from Sanskrit वलन (valana). Related to वळणे (vaḷṇe, “to turn”).
