Presumed to be from the Sanskrit compound लयन (layana) +‎ आवलि (āvali) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) in reference to numerous caves in the area. Compare लेणे (leṇe, cave) and ओळ (oḷ, row, line) from the constituent parts of the Sanskrit compound.
