Etymology

[edit]

Of unclear origin. Phonetic variant and structure denote a substrate origin likely. Sometimes compared with Latin lacertus (the upper arm), Ancient Greek λάξ (láx, with the foot/heel), Old Norse leggr (leg) – themselves of disputed origin – as well as Persian لگد (lagad, kick, recoil).
