Etymology

Derived from रोहित (rohita, “red”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (“red”). Compare Pali rohicca (“a kind of deer”) and Prakrit 𑀭𑁄𑀚𑁆𑀛 (rŏjjha, “a kind of deer”), both inherited from different Old Indo-Aryan words for reddish-brown deer derived from the same root.

     The cuckoo belongs to the Half Months; antelope, peacock, eagle, these are the Gandharvas’; the otter belongs to the Months; the tortoise, doe, iguana, Golathikâ belong to the Apsaras; the black snake belongs to Death.

     yuṅgdhváṃ hyáruṣī ráthe yuṅgdhváṃ rátheṣu rohítaḥ.
     yuṅgdhváṃ hárī ajirā́ dhurí vóḷhave váhiṣṭhā dhurí vóḷhave.

     Yoke to your chariot the bright red mare, yoke the red mares to your chariot.
     Bind to the pole, to draw, the fleet-foot tawny steeds, the best at drawing, to the pole.
