From Proto-Indo-Iranian *yaw(i)yā́ (stream, canal). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎹𐎢𐎻𐎹𐎠 (y-u-vi-y-a /⁠yauviyā⁠/) (whence Persian جوی (juy), جو (ju)), Northern Kurdish co.
