[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘲𑘕𑘹 (mhaṇīje), the passive/optative form of 𑘥𑘜𑘜𑘹 (bhaṇaṇe), 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘜𑘹 (mhaṇaṇe, “to say”) (equivalent to modern म्हणणे (mhaṇṇe)). Compare पाहिजे (pāhije), another relic of the Old Marathi passive/optative construction. Related to म्हणून (mhaṇūn).
