[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayHníš,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂y- (“to hurt, deceive”), which could be reduced from *meh₂- (“to beckon”) + *-yeti.[2][3] See also Latin maereo (“I am mournful”), Proto-Slavic *mamiti (“to deceive”).
