Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘳𑘽𑘐𑘳𑘭 (muṃgusa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀁𑀕𑀼𑀲 (maṃgusa), 𑀫𑀼𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀲 (muggasa), 𑀫𑀁𑀓𑀼𑀲 (maṃkusa), from Sanskrit मद्गुश (madguśa). Ultimately a Dravidian borrowing (compare Telugu ముంగిస (muṅgisa)).[1]
