Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *meyth₂- (to exchange; mutual, reciprocal). Cognate with Latin mittō (to send), Gothic 𐌹𐌽𐌼𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (inmaidjan, to change). Latin mūtuus (mutual) and its English borrowing mutual may also be cognates. The Sanskrit root is मिथ् (mith).
