Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *maȷ́ʰištʰas (“biggest, greatest”), from Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂-is-to-s (“biggest, largest, greatest”), superlative of *méǵh₂s (“big, great”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬀 (mazišta, “biggest, largest”), Ancient Greek μέγιστος (mégistos).
