Etymology

Inherited from Apabhramsa मक्खिय (makkhiya) without compensatory lengthening, from Prakrit मक्खिआ (makkhiā), from Sanskrit मक्षिका (mákṣikā). First attested in c. 1564 as Middle Hindi مكھی (mkhy). Displaced Old Hindi माषी (māṣī /⁠mākhī⁠/). Compare Old Awadhi माछी (māchī), Old Punjabi ਮਖਿ (makhi /⁠makkhi⁠/).
