[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀳𑀺𑀲𑀻 (mahisī), from Sanskrit महिष (mahiṣa). Cognate with Nepali भैंसी (bha͠isī), Gujarati ભેંસ (bhẽs), Marathi म्हैस (mhais), Punjabi ਮ੍ਹੈਂਸ (mhains).
