[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰr̥ṣṭíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰr̥štíš, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥s-tí-s, from *bʰers- (“top, tip, point”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬊𐬎𐬭𐬎-𐬠𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬱𐬙- (vouru-barəšt-, “northwest side of the earth”), Latin fastīgium, Proto-Germanic *burstiz (whence English bristle).
