Compound of भूत (bhūta, being; evil spirit, ghost) +‎ पति (pati, Lord), referring to the Hindu belief that Shiva's entourage consists of ghosts, goblins and spirits.

      bhūtāni sarvā saṃgatya te no muñcantv aṃhasaḥ.
      The spirit, yea, the spirits' Lord, ruler of spirits, we address.
      Together let all spirits meet: may these deliver us from woe.
