[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘱𑘜𑘹 (bhiṇe), from Sanskrit भी (bhī, “to fear”, root), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyh₂- (“to fear”). Indo-Aryan cognates include Konkani भिव्चे (bhivce); cognates outside Indo-Aryan include Russian боя́ться (bojátʹsja, “to fear”).
