Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰakš-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂g- (“to distribute”). The Sanskrit root is भक्ष् (bhakṣ). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬑𐬱𐬀- (baxša-), Persian بخش (baxš), Ancient Greek φᾰγεῖν (phageîn).
