Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀳𑀲𑀇 (vihasaï), from Sanskrit विहसति (vihasati).[1]

  1. to laugh moderately, to smile
    • c. 1500s CE, Tulsīdās, Rāmacaritamānasa :
      बिहसि लखनु बोले मृदु बानी। अहो मुनीसु महा भटमानी॥
      पुनि पुनि मोहि देखाव कुठारू। चहत उड़ावन फूँकि पहारू॥॥
      With a loud laugh, Lakshman spoke softly: Lo, the sage is a proud warrior:
      Again and again he shows me his hatchet, wanting to blow a mountain by mere puffing.
