Inherited from Old Marathi बहिणी (bahiṇī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑁃𑀡𑀻 (bhaiṇī) ,from Sanskrit भगिनी (bhaginī). Cognate to Konkani भैण (bhaiṇ).
