Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)pHóy-nh₂-os, from *(s)poH(y)- (“foam”). Cognate with Lithuanian spáinė, Russian пе́на (péna), Latin pūmex (“pumice”), spuma (“froth”), Old English fām (whence English foam).
