From Proto-Indo-European *pleth₂- (flat). Cognates include Ancient Greek πλᾰτῠ́ς (platús, flat, broad) whence ultimately place, plaza, plate, platter, plateau; Lithuanian plėsti (to expand); Proto-Slavic *pleťè (shoulder); English flat, fold, field.
