Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘖𑘨𑘜𑘹 (pājharaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀚𑁆𑀛𑀭𑀇 (pajjharaï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁆𑀭𑀚𑁆𑀛𑀭𑀢𑀺 (*prajjharati). By surface analysis, पाझर (pājhar) +‎ -णे (-ṇe).
