Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘕𑘜𑘹 (pājaṇe), from Prakrit 𑀧𑀚𑁆𑀚𑁂𑀇 (pajjei), 𑀧𑀸𑀏𑀇 (pāei), from Sanskrit पाययति (pāyayati). Compare Gujarati પાવું (pāvũ), Marwari पाणौ (pāṇau), Sinhalese පොවනවා (powanawā).
