[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnā́bʰ-i-š (“navel, centre”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nóbʰ-i-s, from *h₃nebʰ- (“navel”). Cognate with Latin umbilīcus, Old Prussian nabis, Avestan 𐬥𐬁𐬟𐬁𐬌 (nāfāi), Ancient Greek ὀμφαλός (omphalós), Persian ناف (nâf), English navel.
