Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘠𑘰𑘢 (dhāpa) (compare 𑘠𑘲𑘢 (dhīpa)), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀥𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*dhappa, slap, drive). Compare Gujarati ધપ્પો (dhappo), ધપવું (dhapvũ), Hindustani دَھپّا (dhappā) / धप्पा (dhappā), دھاپْنا (dhāpnā) / धापना (dhāpnā), Punjabi ਧੱਪਾ (dhappā) / دھپّا (dhppā), Nepali धाप (dhāp), धापिनु (dhāpinu), Odia ଧାପ (dhāpa), Bengali ধাপ (dhap).
