Etymology

[edit]

Probably related to Prakrit 𑀥𑀭𑀕𑁆𑀕 (dharagga, cotton) and 𑀢𑀕𑁆𑀕 (tagga, gold thread). Turner suggests a relation to Persian درز (darz, seam, suture), and origin as Ashokan Prakrit *𑀥𑀸𑀕𑁆𑀕 (*dhāgga). Cognate with Punjabi ਧਾੱਗਾ (dhāggā), Nepali धागो (dhāgo), Marathi धागा (dhāgā), and Gujarati ધાગો (dhāgo).
