[edit]Probably related to Prakrit 𑀥𑀭𑀕𑁆𑀕 (dharagga, “cotton”) and 𑀢𑀕𑁆𑀕 (tagga, “gold thread”). Turner suggests a relation to Persian درز (darz, “seam, suture”), and origin as Ashokan Prakrit *𑀥𑀸𑀕𑁆𑀕 (*dhāgga). Cognate with Punjabi ਧਾੱਗਾ (dhāggā), Nepali धागो (dhāgo), Marathi धागा (dhāgā), and Gujarati ધાગો (dhāgo).
