From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dáwṣas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáwšas, from Proto-Indo-European *dews- (to miss, lack, fail, lag, be behind). Cognate with English tire and Ancient Greek δεύομαι (deúomai, to lack).[1][2]
