Etymology

From तेल (tel, oil) +‎ चाटना (cāṭnā, to lick, eat up) +‎ -आ (), named so for its attraction to foodstuffs such as oil. Influenced by Sanskrit तैलपायिका (tailapāyikā). Cognate with Bengali তেলাপোকা (telapōka)
