[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀟𑀩𑁆𑀩 (*ḍabba), *𑀟𑀸𑀯 (*ḍāva, “box; hollow vessel”); possibly ultimately of Dravidian origin.[1] Compare डिब्बा (ḍibbā, “box”), Marathi डाव (ḍāv, “hollowed coconut”), Bengali ডাব (ḍabo), Odia ଡାବ (ḍāba, “raw coconut”). Also compare Swahili dafu, an Indo-Aryan borrowing.
