From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́nu, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵnu, zero-grade of *ǵónu (knee). Cognate with Avestan 𐬲𐬥𐬎 (žnu, knee); see जानु (jānu) for more cognates.
