[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ígʰrati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰʰígʰrati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰí-gʷʰreh₁-ti, from *gʷʰreh₁- (“to smell, sniff”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὀσφραίνομαι (osphraínomai).
