[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀚𑀁𑀢 (jaṃta), from Sanskrit यन्त्र (yantra), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yantrám, from Proto-Indo-European *yem-tróm (“instrument of restraining”), from the root *yem- (“to hold”). For the development of meaning, compare Sanskrit यन्त्रक (yantraka, “turner's wheel, hand-mill”).
