Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀼𑀮𑀼𑀅 (culua), from Sanskrit चुलुक (culuka). Doublet of चुलुक (culuk). Compare Gujarati ચળું (caḷũ), Marathi चूळ (cūḷ), Sindhi چُرُو / चुरू, Punjabi ਚੁਲਾ (culā) / چُلا (culā), ਚੁਲੀ (culī) / چُلِی (culī), Odia ଚଳୁ (caḷu), Assamese চলু (solu).
