[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćiṣṭás (“message”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-) (see Hindi चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī) for more). Compare Gujarati ચિઠ્ઠી (ciṭhṭhī), Hindustani چِٹِّھی (ciṭṭhī) / चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī), Punjabi ਚਿੱਟ (ciṭṭa) / چِٹّ (ciṭṭ), Nepali चिठी (ciṭhī), Bengali চিঠি (ciṭhi), Assamese চিঠি (sithi).
