Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘓𑘨𑘜𑘹 (caraṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀘𑀭𑀇 (caraï), from Sanskrit चरति (cárati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to move; to turn (around)”). Cognate with Gujarati ચરવું (carvũ), Hindi चरना (carnā), Sindhi چَرَڻُ / चरणु (caraṇu), Marwari चरणौ (carṇau), Punjabi ਚਰਨਾ (carnā) / چرنا (crnā), Nepali चर्नु (carnu), Bengali চরা (cora), Assamese চৰা (sora). Related to चालणे (ċālṇe, “to walk”).
