Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀮 (gala) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit गल (gala). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷel- (“throat”). Cognate with Latin gula (“throat”), English gullet, and Persian گلو (galu, throat). Cognate with Konkani गळो (gaḷo), Marathi गळा (gaḷā).
