From late Middle Indo-Aryan *gaṃgavaṭṭiyā, from Prakrit *𑀕𑀁𑀕𑀫𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀺𑀬𑀸 (*gaṃgamaṭṭiyā), from Sanskrit गङ्गा-मृत्तिका (gaṅgā-mṛttikā, Ganges-soil).
