Etymology

[edit]

Of unknown origin.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “There are phonetic and semantic similarities to Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀮𑁆𑀮𑁆 (*kholl, to open) (whence Hindi खोलना (kholnā, to open)) and Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀮 (*khola, cavity, hollow) (whence Hindi खोर (khor, cave)). Perhaps these are related? The phonetic variation of *khōla and its relatives suggests a borrowing from a local language like Dravidian or Munda.”
