Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘏𑘻𑘓𑘜𑘹 (khocaṇe), 𑘏𑘻𑘽𑘓𑘜𑘹 (khoṃcaṇe). Cognate with Hindi खोंचना (khõcnā), Odia ଖୁଞ୍ଚିବା (khuñcibā, “to poke”), Bengali খোঁচানো (khō̃canō, “to poke”), Assamese খোঁচা (khü̃sa), Sylheti ꠈꠥꠌꠣꠘꠤ (kúsani, “to poke”).
