Inherited from Prakrit 𑀔𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀸 f (khallā), from Sanskrit खल्ल (khalla, leather, leather garment). Cognate with Punjabi ਖੱਲ (khalla), Nepali खालो (khālo), Gujarati ખાલ (khāl), and Marathi खाल (khāl).
