Etymology

[edit]

Of unclear,[1] though likely substrate, origin. Przyluski considers the word as related to कुट (kuṭa, fort, stronghold), while Gundert derives the word from Dravidian (compare Telugu గోడ (gōḍa, wall)). Older attempts to connect the word to कृत् (kṛt, to twist threads, to wind) are phonetically unconvincing.[2]
