Etymology

Uncertain. Probably from कान (kān) +‎ -पुर (-pur, city), with the first element descended from the name for the Kanhpuriya dynasty. The ultimate source could be Sanskrit कर्ण (karṇa) or कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa). Compare also the nearby कन्नौज (kannauj, Kannauj).
