[edit]Etymology
[edit]A plant native to Srivijaya, apparently a calque of Javanese kumukus (“cubeb; smoke”), from kukus (“smoke, steam”), based on Hindi कबाब (kabāb, “roast meat, kebab”), or this calque happened first in Arabic كَبَابَة (kabāba), which has also a convincing derivation from كِبَّة (kibba, “globule; meatball”); then likely acquired in Hindustani via Classical Persian کَبَابَهٔ چِینِی (kabāba-yi čīnī), کَبَابِ چِینِی (kabāb-i čīnī, “cubeb”) from it.
