Borrowed from Classical Persian کنیز (kanīz), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (knyck' /⁠kanīzag⁠/), diminutive of [Book Pahlavi needed] (knyk' /⁠kanīg⁠/, maid) from Proto-Iranian *kanyáH (small girl; maiden), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kanyáH, from Proto-Indo-European *ken-. Doublet of कन्या (kanyā). Compare Punjabi ਕਨੀਜ਼ (kanīz) / کَنیز (kanez).
