Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘪𑘪𑘜𑘹 (vavaṇe), 𑘪𑘻𑘪𑘜𑘹 (vovaṇe) from Sanskrit वयति (vayati). A descent from a form उप- + वयति has been suggested.
