Inherited from Prakrit *𑀏𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀮𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*ĕkkalaütta), from Sanskrit एकल-पुत्र (ekala-putra, only son). Compare Punjabi [script needed] (iklauttā). See also एकल (ekal, only).
