Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇𑀡𑀻 (ujjaïṇī), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀉𑀚𑁂𑀦𑀺 (ujeni /⁠ujjeni⁠/), from Sanskrit उज्जयिनी (ujjayinī), from उज्जि (ujji, to win, conquer), from उद्- (ud-, over) +‎ जि (ji, to win).
