Etymology
[edit]Of unclear origin. Despite Vedic attestation, probably borrowed from an unknown substrate. The word structure resembling a compound of आशी (āśī, “to rest on; blessing”) and विष (viṣa, “poison”) is probably a folk-etymological adaptation from the original source. On the other hand, Charpentier does consider the word to be a Vedic compound of *आशी (āśī, “sharp”) + विष (viṣa, “poison”), deriving the former component from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”).
