Uncertain. Probably borrowed from Dravidian.[1]

Probably related to कुरुविन्द (kuruvinda, ruby) (for the semantic relation, compare Sanskrit पद्म (padma, lotus) and पद्मराग (padmarāga, ruby, literally lotus-coloured)(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?).
